The performer displays a series of books, requesting that the spectator choose one. It is an old phone book.
The spectator is now handed a knife or letter opener with the request that he/she insert the blade anywhere in the book and to open to that page.
Next, the spectator places a finger on one phone number.
Concentrating on the spectator’s thoughts, the performer is able to discern the chosen number!
This is a very clever effect that appears to be above board and innocent, but the workings are diabolically simple.
